EDWIN RUBEN NJUGUNA KIARIE

Co-Chair

Growing up in Kenya, one can often see that there are no blurred lines when health, poverty and individual rights are ones’ main focus. By being a student at Queens, QKH provides me with a chance to help some less fortunate families and communities back home in Kenya. As an enrichment activity here on campus, I was quite interested with the club given that it dealt with issues I could easily familiarize with and hence make it less of a task to grow my social links, broaden my interpersonal skills and hopefully, my leadership skills.

I first heard about Nancy Steven’s work in Ngong, Kenya, from a Kingston local. Working with Kenyan partners, Nancy funded and assisted in the building of a school, a women’s empowerment centre, and the Global Hope Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre. As I learned more about what Nancy’s charity, Kenya Help, had accomplished, I became increasingly interested in assisting their mission to alleviate poverty and encourage self-sustainability in Kenya. As a co-chair of Queen’s Kenya Help for the 2018-2019 academic year, I am excited to lead a team of friendly, motivated people as we raise awareness and funds for the people of Ngong. I look forward to building upon the foundation that previous QKH executives have laid.

After volunteering in Kenya in 2015, I knew I wanted to continue to contribute to the country in any way possible.  When I found out about Queen's Kenya Help, I did research into the Kenya Help organization and was eager to assist Nancy Stevens' movement to increase self-sustainability in Kenya.  The team has been incredibly easy to work with; I'm proud of what they have already accomplished and excited to see how much more we can do.

I joined Queen’s Kenya Help because of my interest in international development. In high school, I worked on Haitian relief efforts and wanted to join another great cause here at Queen’s. From my previous experience, I learned how fortunate we are as Canadians and how it should be our duty as advantaged global citizens to do what we can to help those in need. It was humbling to see how such a small act of generosity can affect the lives of so many people. I  really admire Queen’s Kenya Help’s objective to empower and build self-sustaining communities and felt compelled to join.

I joined Queen’s Kenya Help because I wanted to get involved an initiative I believed in. Prior, I have been involved in many committees but never any that are for the greater good, like Kenya Help. What stood out to me the most about Queen’s Kenya Help was the amount of influence it has in Kenya. Being a part of this committee allows me to feel passionate about the work I do.

I first found out about Queen’s Kenya Help in August and at this point in time I had no idea what life was like at Queen’s, but the part that drew me into applying for QKH was the opportunity to meet the founder, Nancy Stevens. Nancy has told us about all of her experience in Kenya and meeting her helped show me how important it is to help those who do not share the same privileges as us. While researching Kenya Help, I found that it aided in building and improving educational centers in Kenya and, as someone going into education, I found this to be absolutely amazing as everyone has the right to an education. Being a part of this club has made my first year even better and because of this club I feel like I am truly making a difference.

I joined Queen’s Kenya Help because I wanted to be part of a movement which elicits real change in children’s lives through education. Education is one of the most important and life changing things a person could have - it can change your worldview, your perception of yourself, as well as your goals for the future. I believe that an education should be a universal right, and Queen’s Kenya Help follows that same stream of thought, making it come true across the globe. Not only does Queen’s Kenya Help raise money that goes directly to building schools and improving school conditions in Kenya, but it has brought me closer to amazing team members and inspiring professionals who are dedicated to helping Kenya fulfill its goal of educating the next generation - in short, Kenya Help has helped me as well.

KIERA LIBLIK

The first time I saw Nancy speak during my first year at Queen's I was inspired. Her passion and drive are  contagious. Kenya Help is unique in that you know where every single dollar goes and you know that it goes directly to helping communities in Kenya. Because Kenya Help is Kingston-based, we have the wonderful opportunity to work directly with the founder (Nancy Stevens) and meet with her on a regular basis.

When I was in first year I had to absolute pleasure to meet and work with the incredible founder of Kenya Help, Nancy Stevens. After my first meeting with Nancy, I knew that Kenya Help was special and that I needed to do everything possible to help out! Not only does Kenya Help bring such invaluable resources (a Women’s Empowerment Centre, orphanage and classroom just to name a few) to the community of Ngong, it’s a Kingston-based charity that is 100% transparent. Each and every dollar donated goes directly to the community and when you donate, you know to exactly what project your money is going to!

 ROMAISA PERVEZ

The reason why I joined Queen’s Kenya Help is because of the passion I have for the organization as a whole. I was first introduced to Nancy Stevens, the founder of Kenya Help in my first year of university at a Conference. Ever since, I’ve been inspired by her efforts to making the villages in Kenya sustainable and raising awareness on how to better the quality of life in these communities

 MEGHAN ZULIAN

In first year I met Nancy Stevens, the founder of Kenya help, and heard her spoke at an event I attended. Immediately I knew that Kenya Help was the type of sustainable organization that we need more of in the world. Not only does it put an emphasis on education and the end goal of self sustenance, it focuses on woman’s rights, a subject dear to my heart. For me, it is fantastic that I get to speak with the founder of the charity I’m raising money for, and that I can tell every person that contributes exactly where their money is going.

VERONIKA ACHOR

The appealing aspect of Queen’s Kenya Help which sparked my interest in pursuing an executive position is the direct contact and collaboration with the founder of this organization as it allows for the opportunity to make a real difference and personally view the positive implications of our hard work at Queen’s in the affected Kenyan communities. The chance to participate in new experiences was a big part of the appeal of applying for an executive position with QKH, and the more involved I am, the greater sense of satisfaction I’ll receive.

 STEPHANIE RODRIGUEZ

I wanted to be part of Kenya Help because it embodies everything I believe a non-profit should be. Dedicated, hardworking and motivated people working tirelessly to help provide education and support to Kenyan people. Knowing that 100% of proceed goes to helping these communities makes me even more passionate and excited to part of this club. This is a team I’m extremely proud to be on and being able to be in direct contact with the founder is an aspect I find will help the club advance even more at Queen’s.  With already incredible support coming from the Queen’s community, my hope is to be able to help that relationship keep growing, becoming bigger and stronger. I love being involved in the Queen’s Community because of the love and support it shows everyone. People show off their true passions here at Queen’s and this club gives me an opportunity to do just that with the Queen’s Community.
